Brompton Bikes. Designing bike frames using Anthropometric data.

Exploring Muscle Activation

An exploration was completed into the Kinetic chain used to pedal a bike. Muscles involved and the order of application was identified.

Anthropometrics -The measurement of the human individual

A total of 12 different references, ranging from studies and printed sources, were used to create a reference table for the 5th, 50th, and 95th body proportions of males and females from several different ethnic backgrounds.

Engineering Application

Specification for the handlebar, saddle, and bottom bracket locations were defined.

Output

Through referencing several different studies on bike fit and comfort the final equations were. They were developed specifically for children’s bike fit based on comfort. 142 test subjects ages 8-16 were fitted to bikes variables recorded, and a linear regression analysis was used to create equations for seat height and reach.
