Translating human body data into engineering specifications for Brompton Bicycle. The goal: define precise frame geometry recommendations based on anthropometric data across a diverse range of body types.

Kinetic Chain Analysis

Starting with how the body actually pedals. I mapped the full kinetic chain involved in cycling, identifying which muscles activate, in what sequence, and how that informs optimal positioning of the rider relative to the bike.

Anthropometrics -The measurement of the human individual

Using 12 references across studies and printed sources, I built a reference table covering the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile body proportions across males and females from multiple ethnic backgrounds. This ensured the specifications would work for real bodies, not just an assumed average.

Engineering Specifications

Body data was translated directly into engineering outputs: precise location specifications for the handlebar, saddle, and bottom bracket. The final equations were developed specifically for children's bike fit, validated against 142 test subjects aged 8 to 16. A linear regression analysis was applied to the recorded variables to generate equations for seat height and reach.
