Swirl
Investigating Subtle Motion in Positive and Negative Space
2019
5 weeks
Swirl was constructed by hand using wood and steel fabrication techniques. The design of the seat is a cumulation of a material investigation of plywood. Originally inspired by the relationship between the user and chair, Swirl grew to a refined minimal expression of lightness.
Lightness:
“The lack of pressure, force, or heaviness of movement “
By playing on the definition of lightness, as gracefulness of movement, the users initiates the chair to create motion and directs this attention to one visual point.

Making and Learning
Swirl starting with 1:5 scale models and refining through 1:1 rough prototypes the final form was constructed and tested along the design process.
Construction methods included steel bending, welding, and plywood milling. Followed by load testing for the design of the seat.
